The Power of the Internet

Last weekend I was feeling particularly lackadaisical, so rather than rush around in an effort to complete various tasks that had gone undone during the week, I simply draped myself over the sofa and spent the afternoon, cup of Marco Polo tea at my side, watching old episodes of Nigella Bites on You Tube.

Stunningly enough, I actually came across an episode that I'd never seen before called Nigella's Christmas Bites. A full hour of holiday treats and simple dishes that Ms. Lawson happens to enjoy during the holidays months. Lentil and chestnut soup, pickled vegetables, Indian spiced potatoes, pasta in walnut sauce, pomegranate meringue, macadamia nut brittle...it all sounded so good! And, as is the case with most of her early recipes, although these dishes aren't hard, nor are they wildly exotic, they tend to be just different and imaginative enough to feel like a series of small revelations.

Although I don't use the one cookbook of hers that I own terribly often (I have Feast, and use it mainly for her granola recipe, pavlova recipe and if I'm in need of some sort of a cake) I was inspired to look into the possibility of purchasing her book Nigella Bites. There were plenty of used copies for sale for less than $4 on Amazon, but as I am both a tightwad and am also loathe to bring yet more stuff into our apartment for fear of causing clutter, it did give me pause.

But then I realized that I had $10 worth of Amazon gift certificates from Swagbucks, which meant that the book would actually be free. And I am not one to turn down free books. Ever.

You do know Swagbucks, no? A search engine that works just like google except for some searches you earn points. And eventually points turn into some sort of merchandise or gift card. That you would actually want to use. This at first glanced seemed a bit to close to those "make $1,000 a week sitting at home!" ads for comfort, but I must admit I've been converted. And now I'm trolling Amazon for something to spend my remaining $6 on.

That sounds like something worth investigating (Swagbucks I mean), as for Nigella I love her but don't have Nigella Bites. I have Feast, How to Eat and Forever Summer which is an hilarious attempt to capture the 2 days of summer in England in recipes. You must cook more from Feast, the choc cake, Georgian meal, indian, mourning, christmas and Easter sections I have each cooked from quite a bit and they are all really excellent and interesting...

I love Nigella and miss her column in the NYT. Thanks for reminding us about her YouTube collection; I haven't seen a good cooking video in a while!

Laura--Precisely because of the same tightwad tendencies and the lack of need for additional clutter in our apartment, I haunt the library shelves, both actually and virtually on their website. My literary eyes have been bigger than my stomach of late, unfortunately. I have a mountain of cookbooks, some of which I can't even remember why I ordered, to plow through.

I do love a bargain Laura, glad you could get Nigella for nothing! We are a Nigella-free house here, MOTH who normally loves all women, can't stand poor Nigella. It's very rare for him to take such a set against someone, but he has here. Something about the way she 'fakes' it he reckons - as he won't enlarge on that statement, I'm none the wiser. I'm sure she has some redeeming features, we just to convert MOTH over!

Kary - It is a wonderful way to while away a rainy afternoon.

Jane - Oooh the easter feast is quite tempting, and I have to admit that the rosemary cake from the mourning chapter has alway intrigued me...I tend to get my Indian recipes from Madhur Jaffrey but perhaps I ought to give our girl Nigella a try. I love How to Eat! I could sit and read it for ages and that Barbados Cream is just to die for.

Miss Cavendish - Yes, I did look forward to her column, but she wrote it for such a short time I suppose I never got too dependent on it. You Tube is such a lifesaver in situations like this!

Terry B - I've been on such a frugality kick that I actually think I've whittled down to a reasonable cookbook collection. Nigel Slater's The Kitchen Diaries is the only one I need to work my way through at the moment...looks like we're on opposing cookbook cycles!

Millie - That's so funny, my MOTH has a total aversion to the Barefoot Contessa...everyone's got their thing I suppose! I just work around it by watching when he's out bike riding. Although when the weather turns inclement that will become more difficult...
