Changing of the Guard

At a dinner party I attended last week the subject of autumn came up. The weather's changing, I love the crisp air, I look forward to this season, I feel guilty hoping for cold weather, ugh, it means winter is coming...various responses poured forth from my dining companions. My personal opinion? I couldn't be happier.

Fall means that I once again am in the the mood to make chocolate brioche on Sunday mornings and strong coffee to match.

It means lots of sweet, firm root vegetables, hearty greens and sturdy fruit in my CSA box...

and gloomy weather, which provides the perfect excuse to cozy up in my apartment with a good book or movie. Or the impetus to head to a friend's place nearby for a good simmer in his steam room, as Paul (who prefers to call it a schvitz) and I did this past Sunday...

And endless cups of tea at all times of day to fortify against the chill.

It's all starting!

Oh, how I love that you love the cold autumn days. And find you home a cozy place to be. Me too!

This was our first morning here in California that felt like fall. Cool this morning and cloudy. I put away the fan that I have had on in the family room. Good Bye to you, dear summer friend. See ya next year.

I made John and I our first New England country morning breakfast....Bacon (I,m off meat, but John's not) scrambled eggs, and country potatoes...all fried up in the cast iron skillet.

Making snickerdoodles this afternoon.

And watching the Ken Burns special on PBS tonight about the National Parks. Are you into that? It is so GOOD ! Just Beautiful!

More later

Thanks for reminding me to look forward to fall--I always have a few days of feeling very blue about departing nectarines, tomatoes...but I do love the long evenings, all those baked goods, root vegetables.

I love the seasons, and love looking forward to the next one and its bounty of treasures .. but I confess I am truly enjoying the Indian Summer in Paris these days ...

Kary - YES! I set up the dvr to record the national parks special and cannot wait to watch it tonight! I love the sound of your country breakfast in a skillet...perfectly delicious. And you probably don't even need lunch after partaking!

Giovanna - I know the feeling...my favorite peach purveyor at the farmers market has switched over to grapes and it made me mometarily sad. Until I gave the grapes a try and they were utterly amazing, unlike any grape I'd ever had before. I've got a couple of pieces of watermelon hanging around in my fridge at the moment and it just feel somehow...wrong.

Laura in Paris - Oh well summer in Paris is a whole other thing! Much more enjoyable than New York summers I imagine. Oddly I had to say I really enjoy winter in Paris for some reason, not sure why.

I love cold autumn days too..but it's not happening here (Sacramento) until January! It's days like this that I miss living near the mountains, in Wyoming.

You should have titled this Changing of the Gourd. I just bought some of those lovely, bumpy and weirdly-shaped gourds that appear at this time of year. With these on the table, persimmons on the tree, it finally feels like autumn.

Mel - I know...as much as I like visiting family in California for Christmas, I do miss the chilly air when I do.

Robin - Gourds freak me out, those little wart things look like some sort of social disease. But send some of those persimmons my way!

I had to stop by your blog when I read the hilarious comment you left at Chateau de Luc (in reference to the heinous sheep head stool.)

A great sense of humor and you know how to make chocolate brioche! Are you looking for a new best friend? I'm available.

I love a changing season too. Here of course we are coming into spring but being a wintery person (not in PERSONALITY of course) I love the change to autumn and yes all that great vegetably rooty food. Do you have a fireplace or is that unusual in most NY apartments? I also think people look better with more layers or clothes on. It is a nightmare in Australia with the weather and the thin see through T shirt layers on people who should know better. !

Jane - Oh a fireplace is a rare amenity...and one that I crave constantly. I could not agree with you more about the benefits of cold weather clothing! Australia and New York seem to have similar problems when it comes to the warm weather...
